WHAT IS A MODERN APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME?
Modern Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes, the Modern Apprentice will
work for you as normal and may attend a Further Education College (subject to the
qualification and sector) for their formal training. This may include specialist training in
the area they work in, as well as improving their English, Maths and IT skills if needed.

MODERN APPRENTICESHIPS ARE DESIGNED BY BUSINESS FOR BUSINESS:
Modern Apprenticeships are funded by Scottish Enterprise and delivered, in close
collaboration with the Sector Skills Council that represent your industry. As an employer,
in a large or small organisation, you know how hard it is to find employees with the right
skills and motivation.
A Modern Apprenticeship could be the answer. You could take on a
young motivated person or give an existing member of your staff aged 16 years plus the
opportunity to be a Modern Apprentice and they will develop the skills you need whilst
working for you.

Modern Apprentices learn while they work so their knowledge is up to date. The training
provided on and off the job gives them the practical skills they need that are right for
your organisation.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM SCOTTISH ENTERPRISE:
Modern Apprenticeships are backed and funded by the Government and administered by
Scottish Enterprise.
THE EMPLOYERS ROLE:
It is your responsibility to:
- Give your Modern Apprentices an induction into their role and provide on-the-job
training.
- Let your Modern Apprentice attend off-the-job training if required (subject to the
Modern Apprenticeship framework). Most of your Modern Apprentice's training is
on-the-job.
- Accept regular visits from Train'd Up who will access your Modern Apprentice and
make sure that you are happy with the programme (dates and times of occasional
visits will be organised by our Workplace Competence Assessors at your
convenience).
- Pay your Modern Apprentice's wages (Wages should reflect your Modern
Apprentice's skills, experience, ability and the going rate for the job).
- Adhere to Health & Safety regulations.
Employers retain all of their employers' rights. You should therefore treat your Modern
Apprentice as you would any other member of your staff. They therefore require:
- PAYE number.
- A Contract of Employment that outlines your Apprentices': role and duties, working
hours/Breaks, holiday entitlement, salary, sick pay entitlement, disciplinary action
details etc.
THE TRAIN'D UP ROLE:
Throughout the Modern Apprenticeship one of our "Workplace Competence Assessors"
will provide support and guidance to you and your Apprentice. They will work with you
to:
- Conduct an Skills Needs Analysis of your organisation.
- Help select which Modern Apprentice is right for your vacancy.
- Support existing staff on to Modern Apprenticeship Training.
- Explain how an Modern Apprenticeship Programme works.
- Agree an Individual Training Plan.
- Manage the training and assessment.
- Keep you fully informed of key dates and Modern Apprenticeship developments.
- Ensure national quality standards are met and deliver integrated, coherent training.
